  • Reporting Internet Fraud and Email Scams
    Common Scams
There are many people out there who want to steal your money. Unfortunately, some of them may use our Classifieds. While most users are good, and honest, a few are not. Some scenarios that should raise a red flag:
         - Make unrealistic promises or offers to buy
         - Have complicated instructions for the seller regarding shipping, check cashing, transfer of money, etc.

Below is an example email you may receive from a scam artist. The concept of this scam is simple, you are being sent a STOLEN check. You cash it, send the balance to the PO Box of the buyer. When this is found out by the company whose check the scam artist stole, YOU are responsible for paying back the balance.

"We are interested in buying your above mentioned (10" F/7.5 truss Dobsonian with Swayze mirror) at advertised rate of $1,995. Goods to be picked up from your location for onward shipping to London. Cost and modaliti s of shipping to be born by us. Payment for the purchase is by check through a debtor in US. The debtor owes us higher than our purchase. He will therefore be sending you a check for $7,000 to cover the cost of our order, as well as the Shipping costs. On receipt of the check, you will cash and deduct the cost of our order .The balance you will send as we would instruct you to the Agency that will ship the Goods to us. If this arrangement suites you fine, please send us your address where to send the check, as well as the name to be on it. Also send us your phone number for easy communication."

    Attention Classified Users

    ATTENTION:

Note to users:  The free classified ad section was built to help individuals sell personal items.  It is not a free store front for dealers to advertise general merchandise.   Dealers who post endless lists of items for sale not only abuse the section, but contribute to a poor user experience.  Thank you from SETXHomepage.com

SETXHomepage.com works hard to maintain a friendly environment in which buyers and sellers are honest and trustworthy; however, some scammers succeed in posting or responding to listings.  SETXHomepage.com is offering the following tips to ensure your buying and selling experiences are hassle-free:

Know what you are buying. Before making an offer to a seller, ask questions to learn more about what they are selling.

DO NOT do business with anyone offering to send you payment for a higher amount than your selling price, especially if they are buying the item sight-unseen.

Be suspicious of anyone claiming to be acting on behalf of a “client” or another “customer”.

Be suspicious of anyone offering an item for free or at a reduced price, and asking for the shipping fees to be sent to them in advance.

Ask for personal contact information. Once you have negotiated the price and have decided to buy or sell the item, ask for a phone number and call him/her up at a random time to make sure he/she is receiving the calls.

Use a payment method with fraud protection. Many scammers only accept money by wire transfer, Money Gram, or bank transfer because buyers cannot get their money back and sellers cannot be tracked.

Don’t ship an item to a buyer until you have payment in hand, in the equivalent of cash, for the agreed upon sale price.  Avoid complicated payment schemes that involve multiple steps or buyers.

Keep records of all correspondence.  Hold on to any e-mail, notes, shipping documents, and payment information.  Be sure to print a copy of the ad!  These records may prove useful in the rare event that you need to seek a refund from a seller or report an incident of fraud.
